What Is the Best Car Insurance Company?

Don’t waste your time with average car insurers, go for the best!

If you’re looking for the best car insurance company, our analysis points to USAA as the top choice. However, keep in mind that USAA is only available to certain individuals. For those who don’t qualify for USAA, American Family comes in at a close second and may be the best option for many drivers. State Farm, Geico, and Nationwide also rank highly in our ratings.

Ultimately, the best car insurance company for you depends on various factors such as your age, location, driving record, and personal preferences. These preferences could include excellent customer service, a reputable name, or efficient claims handling. To help determine which company aligns with your needs, we conducted a survey of current policyholders from each of our top-rated car insurance companies. Below, you’ll find their ratings in several categories focused on customer service.

State Farm, USAA, and American Family provide the best customer service.

When it comes to customer service, USAA takes the lead as the top-ranked company in the subcategory. American Family and State Farm share the second spot, both providing commendable service. Our survey reveals that a significant 73% of USAA customers who have not filed a claim are completely satisfied with the customer service they receive. However, this number drops to 53% among customers who have filed a claim.

It’s important to note that USAA car insurance policies are exclusively available to members of the military community and their families, so it may be wise for most customers to explore other insurers in our rating.

Meanwhile, over 65% of American Family customers who haven’t filed a claim express complete satisfaction with their customer service experience. The number slightly decreases to just under 58% among policyholders who have filed a claim. State Farm customers also report similar levels of satisfaction, with approximately 60% and 54% respectively for those who haven’t and have filed a claim. Finally, Nationwide, Geico, Travelers, and Farmers all tie at No. 4 in this subcategory of customer service quality.

Best at handling claims: American Family

Welcome to our guide on the top performers in the Claims Handling subcategory! American Family has claimed the number one spot with an impressive score of 4.3, narrowly surpassing USAA, which earned a commendable score of 4.2. Our survey results reveal that a remarkable 61% of American Family policyholders are completely satisfied with the ease of filing a claim, while 56% express complete satisfaction with how their claims were resolved.

Additionally, just under 52% of American Family customers expressed complete satisfaction regarding the status updates they received while their claim was being processed. Following closely behind American Family and USAA is a four-way tie for third place between State Farm, Farmers, Geico, and Nationwide. Progressive, Travelers, and Allstate share seventh place, while AAA secures the tenth position.

Most Likely To Be Recommend: American Family and USAA

If you’re in search of a highly recommended insurer for your car, look no further than USAA. Our survey has revealed that an impressive 63% of USAA policyholders who haven’t filed a claim are extremely likely to suggest this company to others seeking car insurance. It’s worth noting that USAA exclusively caters to members of the military community, so if you don’t fall into this category, you may need to explore other insurance options.

American Family also garners positive recommendations from its policyholders. Just over 40% of American Family policyholders who haven’t filed a claim express a high likelihood of recommending the insurer to someone seeking coverage. Meanwhile, just over 62% of those who have filed a claim are very likely to offer their recommendation.

Additionally, State Farm, Nationwide, and Geico are other companies that receive commendations from their customers and are tied for third place in our rating within this subcategory.

USAA and American Family are the most likely to be renewed

If you’re wondering whether USAA policyholders are likely to renew their policies, our survey results show that over 69% of customers who haven’t filed a claim said they are very likely to do so. Even among policyholders who have filed a claim, the numbers remained steady with more than 66% describing themselves as very likely to renew.

These impressive results have earned USAA the top spot in the Most Likely to be Renewed subcategory. American Family, coming in at No. 2, also performed well in our consumer survey. Approximately 65% of those who haven’t filed a claim expressed a high likelihood of renewing with American Family, and this number increased to over 68% among those who have filed a claim. Hello everyone! Ever ponder the reason behind the format of your auto insurance bill? You may compare it to attempting to decipher a coded communication. So, do not worry! We’re here to explain it in straightforward terms. So take a cup of coffee, settle in, and let’s explore the factors that influence the price of your auto insurance.

The first consideration is location.

You might be surprised to learn that your location has a big impact on the cost of your auto insurance. Your premium can be on the higher side if you live in a busy metropolis where there is a larger danger of accidents, theft, and vandalism. The calm suburbs, however, can result in a small discount. Therefore, your address does matter.

Your Age and Driving Experience: Are You an Expert?

Age and experience affect how much a car insurance policy will cost. Younger drivers typically pay higher premiums, especially those who have just graduated from driving school. However, as you accumulate years of safe driving, your costs may start to decline. It’s like getting your chef’s license in terms of insurance.

Is the gender issue still relevant?

Your gender used to have a significant impact on insurance rates. But circumstances are changing, and gender-based pricing is now outlawed in several states. However, certain insurers might still take it into account, so it’s important to watch out for when you compare quotes.

Make and model of Your Trusty Steed

Your car is more than simply a set of wheels; it also affects your car insurance. Your premium may be influenced by the brand and model. Luxury or high-performance automobiles may have greater prices because of the high cost of maintenance or replacement parts. On the other hand, a dependable family automobile can imply less expensive insurance.

Going Back in Time: Your Record

Your driving record functions as a time capsule for auto insurance. Accidents, fines, and other blemishes might linger for some time. The better your rates, the cleaner your record. It’s similar to submitting a flawless CV for your application for auto insurance.

Minimum or Maximum Coverage: A Conundrum?

It’s like choosing from a menu when selecting your coverage level. Do you choose the most basic level of coverage or the entire spread? Naturally, your premium will increase if you select additional coverage. However, it also entails extra security for when you need it. Finding that sweet spot is the key.

The Art of Comparison when Looking for Savings

The golden rule of auto insurance is to shop around. It’s similar to finding a fantastic deal on your preferred device, except much bigger. Different insurance companies provide various discounts and pricing. Therefore, comparing quotes from many insurers is the best approach to find a price that matches your budget and a policy that meets your demands.

How Much Is Enough? The Car Insurance Quantity Game

So, how much auto insurance is recommended? It’s similar to Goldilocks and her porridge in that it’s just right—not too hot, nor too cold. The baseline is established by state regulations, most of which demand a certain level of liability insurance. Even added benefits like uninsured motorist insurance or personal injury protection (PIP) are included in some states.

But that doesn’t tell the whole tale. Your lender or lessor will have the final word on the insurance you require if you’re financing or leasing your vehicle. So keep in mind to refer to your financing agreement—it serves as your guide to the appropriate coverage.

Folks, there you have it! Demystifying your auto insurance premium. It’s just common sense; it’s not rocket science. So drive carefully, maintain coverage, and may your premiums always be reasonable!

Methodology

In order to determine the top car insurance companies, we conducted a thorough evaluation of each company’s average rates for different types of drivers, the extent of coverage options available, customer complaints, and collision repair ratings provided by professionals in the auto body industry. Our assessment of auto insurance rates (which accounted for 50% of our overall evaluation) was based on data gathered from Quadrant Information Services.

We examined the average rates offered by each company for various driver profiles, including those with a clean driving record, those who have been involved in accidents, those with speeding tickets or DUI offenses, individuals with poor credit history, drivers caught without insurance coverage, as well as scenarios involving the addition of teen drivers, senior drivers, and young drivers.

Unless otherwise specified, our rates were based on a 40-year-old female driver operating a Toyota RAV4 and maintaining coverage limits of $100,000 for bodily injury per person, $300,000 for bodily injury per accident, and $100,000 for property damage (commonly referred to as 100 300 100). Additionally, uninsured motorist coverage at limits of 100 300 was taken into account alongside collision and comprehensive insurance policies that carried a deductible of $500.

Car insurance coverage options (25% of score):

Every auto insurance company offers the fundamental coverage options like liability insurance, collision and comprehensive coverage, and other common features. However, it’s equally crucial to have access to extra coverage options that offer enhanced protection or potential savings. Within this category, we applaud companies that provide accident forgiveness, new car replacement, vanishing deductibles, usage-based or pay-per-mile insurance, and SR-22s. These additional offerings can truly make a difference in your insurance experience and provide you with the peace of mind you deserve.

Complaints (20% of score):

We collected complaint data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, which keeps track of complaints filed against insurance companies in each state. When it comes to auto insurance, most complaints revolve around claims and include issues like unfair settlements, delays, and rejections. On average, the industry receives a complaint ratio of 1.00. Therefore, companies with a ratio lower than 1.00 tend to have fewer customer complaints.

Based on our comprehensive ratings, the top car insurance companies in 2023 include USAA, American Family, State Farm, Geico, Nationwide, Farmers, Travelers, Allstate, AAA, and Progressive. These rankings are determined through a combination of survey responses from 9,500 consumers and other reliable sources.

Our research indicates that in 2023, USAA and American Family stand out as the best car insurance companies. They received high overall scores of 4.4 and 4.3, respectively, in our evaluations. USAA offers exceptionally low premiums, more than 33% below the national average. American Family is also an excellent choice, with rates over 10% below the national average. For most people, American Family may be the best option due to USAA’s limited membership to military personnel and immediate family members.

When it comes to affordability, USAA takes the lead in offering the most affordable car insurance policies. On average, a USAA policy costs around $1,022 per year, which is $525 less than the national average annual rate. However, it’s important to note that USAA coverage is exclusively available to members of the military community. For those who don’t qualify for USAA, Geico often provides competitive rates, with an annual average rate of $1,250, which is $297 lower than the national average.

To find the best price on car insurance, it’s crucial to compare quotes from multiple insurers. Obtaining quotes from at least three insurance companies, while ensuring they offer the same type and amount of coverage, is recommended by the Insurance Information Institute (III). This allows you to accurately assess your options and choose a policy that suits your budget.

A car insurance premium is the specific amount of money you pay to your insurance company in exchange for coverage for you and your vehicle. You can typically choose to pay your premium either monthly or annually. Failing to pay your premium can lead to a lapse or cancellation of your car insurance coverage.

Car insurance can cover theft, but you need to add comprehensive coverage to your policy, in addition to basic liability and collision insurance. Comprehensive coverage ensures you’re protected if your car is stolen, vandalized, or damaged during a theft. However, it’s important to note that comprehensive coverage won’t cover personal items stolen from your vehicle. For such cases, you would need to rely on your homeowners or renters insurance.

In many cases, your car insurance policy will cover a rental car, especially if your policy includes collision, comprehensive, and liability coverage. However, keep in mind that there might be rental coverage limits. For instance, your insurance company may not cover the entire cost if you choose a high-end luxury rental or need a long-term rental. It’s essential to check with your car insurance company or agent to understand the specific rental coverage provided by your policy.

While insurance companies typically require you to insure a car that’s in your name, there are alternative options. You may consider obtaining a co-title with the car’s owner or having the owner transfer the title to your name. Another possibility is qualifying for a non-owner insurance policy if you don’t currently have a policy of your own. This type of insurance provides basic liability coverage for bodily injury and property damage when you’re driving someone else’s vehicle and are at fault for an accident. It can also cover you if you’ve lost your license and need to file an SR-22 form to reinstate it. Keep in mind that car insurance laws can vary from state to state, so research the requirements in your specific location.

A deductible in car insurance is the amount you agree to pay out of pocket before your insurance company covers the remaining costs of a claim. For example, if you have a $500 deductible and you file a claim for $2,000 in damages, you would pay the initial $500, and your insurance company would cover the remaining $1,500. Deductibles can vary depending on your policy and the type of coverage you have. Choosing a higher deductible can often lower your premium, but it means you’ll pay more if you need to make a claim.
